When you want to start a dropshipping business, you will need suppliers.
You can search for suppliers manually on Google, contact them, and find out about their dropshipping program. This is usually easy…you only need to type “name of product + dropshipping” on Google to find companies that may be dropshipping your products.
However, if you want to make your work easier, you can work with a dropshipping platform such as Oberlo, Modalyst, Spocket, Ezusy, and others.
Two of the dropshipping companies that I’ve worked with are Spocket and Modalyst.
Which, between the two, should you go for?
In this Spocket vs. Modalyst review, I’ll provide an overview of what to expect from each platform.
By the end of this article, you will have a good idea of the company to go with.
Let’s get started.
Spocket vs. Modalyst: The Basics
I’ve already written a review of Spocket before.
Both Spocket and Modalyst are dropshipping platforms that connect store owners with product suppliers. There are a number of reasons why you would want to work with a dropshipping platform rather than an individual dropshipping company:
i) Carry diverse inventory
With a dropshipping platform, you can carry multiple product catalogues from different suppliers. On the other hand, when working with an individual company, there may be restrictions on the catalogue that you can carry.
For example, I was researching USA lingerie dropshippers and came across BeWicked from the WorldWide Brands Directory.
On contacting the company, I found out that they offer dropshipping services. However, dropshippers are only allowed to carry certain items listed under “clearance”. On checking the clearance section, the products are not really as diverse as those that are not on clearance.
As a result, if you want to dropship lingerie with BeWicked, you will have a limited inventory choice. This can significantly stifle your growth.
That’s one potential issue of working with individual dropshipping companies.
On the flipside, with a dropshipping platform like Spocket or Modalyst, you have a wide range of suppliers to work with. This means you can carry diverse inventory on your store.
If you are starting a general store, which is what most beginner drosphippers do, you will be better off with signing up with a dropshipping platform than an individual company.
Here are some more reasons why you should choose a dropshipping platform rather than an individual company to dropship items:
ii) Access to vetted suppliers
Dropshipping platforms vet the suppliers that they allow on their programs. Moreover, other dropshippers also rate the suppliers.
Therefore, it is easy for you to know what to expect from a supplier in terms of quality of products, shipping, support, etc.
You can easily find suppliers that meet your criteria by using search filters on Spocket or Modalyst.
iii) Automatic Fulfilment
If you sign up with individual companies that offer dropshipping services, you will likely have to fulfil the orders manually. This means that when a customer places an order, you will have to log into your store to get the order details, and then pass it to the dropshipping company.
With Spocket and Modalyst, fulfilling orders is easy. Most dropshipping platforms have apps that integrate with the major ecommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.). The apps sync with the platforms and can automatically fulfil orders.
With these apps, when customers place orders on your store, the orders are automatically passed to the supplier for fulfilment.
Now that you know why you should use a dropshipping platform rather than dropship with an individual company, let’s compare Spocket and Modalyst.
Spocket vs. Modalyst (Overview of the Platforms)
Overview of Modalyst
Modalyst was founded in 2012 and makes it easy for anyone to sell various niche products on their online store. You can use the app with different ecommerce platforms, including BigCommerce, Shopify, and Wix.
Overview of Spocket
Spocket was founded in 2017 and has quickly become one of the best dropshipping platforms. In fact, it is the best Orberlo alternative that I’ve found.
I signed up with Spocket after ePacket shipping times changed from less than a week to over a month.
With Spocket, you can find products to dropship from US and EU suppliers. These products are of high quality and, often, ship to customers in less than a week.
Spocket also works with both Shopify and WooCommerce. If you’ve been reading my blog, you already know that I run some of my stores with WooCommerce.
Spocket vs. Modalyst Comparison (Which One Should You Choose?)
How to Get Started With Spocket
Getting started with Spocket is easy; simply visit the website and sign up. The sign up process is simple and involves creating an account by filling your name and the usual personal information.
There is no fee for joining the platform. Moreover, you do not have to provide a credit card to sign up.
How to Get Started With Modalyst
Modalyst also has a simple signup process. To get an account, head to the website and provide your details.
During the signup process, you will have to indicate whether you are a distributor or a retailer. If you wish to start a dropshipping store, select the ‘retailer’ option.
After clicking the signup button, there are other steps you will have to complete. These are:
- Your business name
- Location of your customer base
- The main product categories that you sell
- The ecommerce platform you use
- Your password
Generally, signing up at Modalyst takes more time than at Spocket. With Modalyts, you have to provide a lot more details about yourself and business. However, with Spocket, you will be ready to start selling after only providing an email address and setting your password.
Importing Products
After creating your account at either Modalyst or Spocket, you will need to import products to your store to start selling.
Different dropshipping platforms support different ecommerce platforms. First off, you will have to connect the platforms to your store. This usually involved using a plugin, app, or code on your store to integrate it with the dropshipping platform.
Let’s look at how you can use Spocket and Modalyst to import the products you want to your store.
Importing Products With Spocket
Follow the steps below.
1. Log into your Spocket account
2. On the search bar, type a keyword related to the product you want to import. For example, if you are selling iPhone cases, you can simply type “iPhone cases” on the search bar.
You can filter the search results to see only premium products, Made in USA products, etc.
3. Check the products you want from the list that will be provided. Select those products and click “Add to Import List”
4. Click the Import List to view the products you have selected.
5. Click Push to Store to get the products live on your store.
6. Finally, go to the Product List page and select any product you want to view. Then, click on View Listing to see the product in your WooCommerce or Shopify store.
Importing Products from Modalyst
Importing products from Modalyst is nearly similar to the way it’s done on Spocket.
Follow the steps below:
- Log into your Modalyst account
- Click on Find Products
3. Type the keyword of the products that you want to import into your store
4. When you see a product you would like to import, click on Add to Import List.
After adding a product to the Import List, you can edit its description before pushing it to your store. You can push either a single or multiple products to your store.
My Verdict: Both Spocket and Modalyst have a similar process for importing products to your store.
Store Branding
As a dropshipper, you may be selling products from different suppliers. However, you do not want your customers to know that you are dropshipping.
So, how can you convince customers that the products you are selling come from you?
By branding your store.
Both Spocket and Modalyst allow you to create branded invoices for your store. This way, when a customer purchases an item from your shop, they will get an invoice with your brand, which is likely to make them trust you more.
Read on to find out how to create branded invoices in both Modalyst and Spocket.
Creating Branded Invoices in Modalyst
When you dropship from Modalyst, the suppliers’ information will not be included in the invoices.
You can edit your store information, input your address and logo, and even customize your messages to brand the invoice.
The invoice branding feature is available across all plans by Modalyst, including the Free plan.
Creating Branded Invoices in Spocket
Follow the steps below:
1. Log into your Spocket account
2. Click on the Settings tab
3. Go to the Branded Invoicing Tab and enable branded invoicing
4. Indicate your contact email and phone number
5. If you have subscribed to a paid plan, you can add a personalized note as well as your store logo.
[wps_note size=”17″ background=”#fae588″ color=”#333333″ radius=”3″]NOTE: Not all suppliers on Spocket offer branded invoices. When you want to add a product, check to see whether the supplier offers branded invoicing. This information is usually found in the product description.[/wps_note]
Both Modalyst and Spocket allow you to create branded invoices for your store. However, while Modalyts offers the feature across all its plans, Spocket only offers it on paid plans.
My Verdict: When it comes to invoice branding, Modalyst is a step ahead of Spocket as you can get branded invoices even on the Free plan.
E-Commerce Platforms Supported
Before you select a dropshipping platform, it is important to decide on the e-commerce platform you will be using. Two of the biggest e-commerce platforms are WooCommerce and Shopify.
Of course, you can always get your store built from scratch. However, this will be quite expensive and can be problematic along the way. This is why most dropshippers prefer building their stores on existing platforms.
What Platforms Does Spocket Support?
Spocket can be integrated with both Shopify and WooCommerce. If you have built your store on either of the platforms, you can easily connect Spocket to it to be able to import and auto fulfil products from suppliers.
What Platforms Does Modalyst Support?
Modalyst can be integrated with Shopify, Wix, and BigCommerce. If you are using any of these platforms, Modalyts will be great for you.
I use WooCommerce for my dropshipping websites and it is a shame that Modalyst does not support it. I’m not sure why the platform does not integrate with WooCommerce while it is the most popular ecommerce platform.
My Verdict: In terms of platform support, Spocket wins for me. However, if your store is built on Shopify, you can go with either of the two dropshipping platforms. But if you are building a WooCommerce store, Spocket will be your only option.
Quality of Suppliers Available
One of the things that can make or break your dropshipping business is the suppliers you use. I mean, if your suppliers are taking a long time to ship products, do not provide tracking numbers, package your items unprofessionally, etc., you are bound to struggle to become successful.
Therefore, it is important to work with suppliers with integrity and quality products. Whether you choose Spocket or Modalyst, you should check the reviews written about various suppliers to determine whether they will be a good fit for your business.
What Suppliers Are Available on Spocket?
Spocket suppliers are sourced from the US and EU countries. As a result, majority of the products you will find on the platform are a little more expensive than what you would find on, say, AliExpress or other China-based dropshipping platforms.
However, with suppliers coming from the US and EU, the products tend to be of higher quality. Moreover, the shipping times are fast, which is something US customers have come to expect in the last few years.
Before ordering a product from a supplier, you can check their rating to know what to expect.
What Suppliers Are Available on Modalyst?
In the Modalyst dropshipping platform, you will find a curated selection of independent and international suppliers. Majority of the suppliers offer fashion apparel and accessories. There are a few that offer electronics, beauty, and home items.
While you will find suppliers from around the world on Modalyst, majority of them are from the US.
[wps_note size=”17″ background=”#fae588″ color=”#333333″ radius=”3″]NOTE: One thing that makes Modalyst stand out is that the suppliers on the platform are not wholesalers but independent designers and brands. Modalyst allows the suppliers to join the platform after reviewing the quality of the products.[/wps_note]
My Verdict: Both Modalyst and Spocket have high quality suppliers on theie platforms. However, Spocket seems to have more suppliers than Modalyst. Therefore, you are bound to get more ideas on what to sell from the platform than you would from Modalyst.
Another thing, since Modalyst does not work with wholesalers, products on the platform tend to be a little bit expensive. If you are looking to generate revenues through massive margins, choose the suppliers on Spocket.
However, if you want to expose your audience to new brands from independent designers, Modalyst will be good for you.
Shipping Times
How Long Do Items Ship from Spocket?
The suppliers on Spocket are based in the US and Europe. Therefore, the products ship fast to customers from all over the world.
US customers can receive goods in 2 to 3 days while international customers can get their items in 7 to 21 days.
How Long Do Items Take to Ship from Modalyst?
Since Modalyst has suppliers from all over the world, the shipping times are different. Every supplier has their own shipping time, which can be longer or shorter depending on the type of item you are dropshipping and the customer’s destination.
If you are concerned about shipping times, you will have a better shot with the suppliers at Spocket.
Pricing Plans
Both Spocket and Modalsyt offer free basic plans for ecommerce dropshippers. However, as is expected, you won’t get a lot out of the free plans.
With that said, most dropshippers will want to go with a paid plan at either platform. Here’s what you should know about the plans:
Spocket Pricing Plan
Spocket offers four paid subscription plans. Each of the plans comes with a 14-day trial, with the cheapest plan starting at $19 a month.
Check what is offered under each plan on the image below:
If you already have a well-established dropshipping business, I suggest you purchase an annual plan for the Pro, Empire or Unicorn plan. Subscribing for the annual plan will get you some great discounts
Modalyst Pricing Plan
With Modalyst, you’ll only have two price plans to choose from.
The cheapest plan starts at $35 a month. However, you can get a discount of up to 25% if you pay the annual fee.
Looking at the features offered under the plans, they are similar to the Hobby plan (the free plan). The only difference between the plans is whether you can get access to premium suppliers and the number of products you can upload.
Here is a table showing the features available across all plans as well as the prices.
Modalyst also offers some discount when you purchase an annual plan. Here is how the annual prices look like:
[wps_alert type=”primary”]NOTE: There is a 5% transaction fee charged across all Modalyst paid plans.[/wps_alert]
My Verdict: Spocket offers different plans at various price ranges. This is good, especially if you are beginning your store and are watching your costs.
Also, Spocket does not charge transaction fees on its paid plans.
On the other hand, Modalyst offers just two paid plans. And I don’t like the 5% transaction fee as it can quickly eat into your margins.
For pricing, Spocket is clearly the winner.
Spocket vs. Modalyst: Which is the Best Dropshipping Platform?
From this review, it’s clear that both Spocket and Modalyst have their pros and cons.
Which Dropshipping Platform Should You Choose?
Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide on the dropshipping platform to use.
For my case, I use Spocket because it supports WooCommerce (I run my store on WooCommerce) and the variety of paid plans makes it easy for me to upgrade or downgrade, depending on my needs.
Moreover, Spocket does not charge transaction fees. This is a good thing as you will be left with more money for your business if you use Spocket.
I hope this Spocket vs. Modalyst comparison has been helpful for you.
